Why do I need a modern web browser to edit using PagePlay?

Some people have asked why they can't log in to edit their PagePlay site using Internet Explorer 6. There are some good reasons why...

Some IE6 facts:

  1. It was launched in 2001, and replaced almost three years ago.

  2. It's one of the least secure browsers still in use.

  3. It costs web developers a fortune, because almost every other browser in use broadly adhere to common web standards - IE6 has many many quirks which on many projects can take us up to 60% of the time to fix IE6 errors and display issues.

  4. Because of the last fact, we believe it has throttled the development of the web.

All PagePlay sites fully support IE6 when you are visiting them - because we believe you shouldn't have to think about which browser you are using when you visit a site - EVER.

But we have taken a long hard think about how we want to develop the PagePlay application and decided we simply couldn't afford to support IE6 for editing whilst also developing the system our customers need - at the prices that they can afford. Initially we did plan to include IE6 support further down the line, but we are taking note that many other significant application developers are discontinuing support for IE6 completely.

We would advise anyone using Windows 2000 or earlier to download and install Firefox with all later Windows users to use either Firefox or IE7 and above. PagePlay is a modern web application and requires a modern web browser. The IT contacts/departments for most large organisations will be able to install Firefox even if the user doesn't have the right admin rights to install software on the computer.

If someone wants to dump a load of cash at our door because they value the holding on to IE6 so much that they can pay us to fix all of its quirks - then heck we'll try it! But for now, we'd rather spend our time and energy building a great system with the features people demand, rather than mopping up for large (often well funded) organisations that refuse to keep their IT even vaguely up to date.
